HOTEL SERIES, read the fine print

When you are a long term public servant working in a technical environment with highly qualified scientists and your technical photographic skills call for a similar sense of commitment and attention to detail; it is possible that you might be side-tracked (visually) if you start mixing with other art inclined photographic practitioners.

Such is the case with Gary Cranitch. Working at the Queensland Museum for 30 years, Cranitch has co-authored books like The Great Barrier Reef - a Queensland Museum Discovery Guide; and is well respected in his fairly technical genre of photography. Traveling up and down the length of Queensland and staying at less than five star hotels/motels, Gary quickly needed some light relief. The Government of the great State of Queensland is not noted for supplying high end accommodation!

An Ironing Station is Provided Should you Require it; © Gary Cranitch, 2015

Hence this series.

What started as a light hearted way of killing time whilst away from his family in Brisbane, soon developed into a project of some interest and value. Motels and hotels are well spaced along the coastal Bruce Highway between Brisbane and Cairns, and have had various rises and falls in their popularity and usefulness as a night’s accommodation. On showing his resultant images to other photographers Cranitch was encouraged with their support for this documentation.

He quickly discovered that the advertising brochures sometimes spoke in terms a long way distant from the reality of Cranitch’s photography. It was from these sources that most of the titles for the works were drawn. Whilst all the photographs have the hallmark trappings of a visual technician, it is the whimsy behind their creation that is the strong point of this Exhibition.

Opening at Gallery Frenzy on Friday 1 May 2015 at 6:30pm, Hotel Series, read the fine print will be an interesting, if slightly tongue in cheek documentary observation of the Queensland tourism industry.

Also attend the Artist’s Talk on Wednesday 13 May at 6:30pm and hear how a photographic technician moved via boredom through cynical documentation to fine art and a gallery exhibition. This could be a perfect way for you to discover how to refine your own photography with a view to showing it to a wider audience.

Foto Frenzy Sponsors 2015 AIPP Illustrative Category

With the Foto Frenzy Directors toting up some sixty years of membership of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography between them, it goes without saying that we are strong supporters of the AIPP.

We were proud to sponsor the 2015 AIPP Illustrative Category in this year’s Queensland Epson Professional Photography Awards.

The Category winner was Kris Anderson of images by Anderson.

Kris is a newish member of the AIPP, having joined in 2011. He has entered the Queensland Awards for the past four years; profiting from the steep learning curve that often comes to new members. Kris has now entered the national APP Awards for the past two years, earning three points towards his Associate’s goal of five points. A strong performance for a new member.

Kris speaks highly of attending the 2012 AIPP Hair of the Dog Convention – from hearing Murray Fredericks speak to participating in the Greg Gibson workshop. It opened his eyes to lots of new things.

With a personal interest in improvised theatre, it is natural that Kris’ studio practice includes music and theatre clients. He states that “my job is to adapt to whatever is going on, help the actors present the best version of themselves, and to identify and provide whatever it is the scene needs at that moment to inspire the right feeling in the audience“.

All the winning Category portfolios will be on display at Gallery Frenzy from Thursday 9 April until 24 April 2015.

Josh Keep and The North Exhibition

Josh Keep; © Ian Poole, Brisbane, 2015.

Joshua Keep is opening his first solo exhibition, The North, the other half of England, here at Gallery Frenzy on Friday 6 March 2015. Continuing a proud Foto Frenzy tradition in this our twenty-third exhibition, Josh is one of many first time exhibitors.

Shot on a Mamiya 7 camera using 43mm and 80mm lenses, Josh has exposed Kodak Portra film in both 160 and 400ISO rolls. The negatives were digitally scanned and printed by Andrew Merefield from Living Image Fine Art Printing Service.

A mechanical engineer from the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, Josh lived and worked in Huddersfield, England for three years. This was when he completed the project. Although he has usually worked in an analogue black and white format, this Exhibition is shot and shown in colour. It is this use of colour that distinguishes the work exhibited. The documentation of a depressed area in Northern England is enhanced by the clever use of a muted tonal palette.

Human presence is inferred rather than shown, with few people populating his photographs. The built environment is captured with great detail and describes a multi-cultural neighbourhood that is down on its luck. The balance between British tradition and contemporary reality is displayed in gritty realism.

Whilst irony is present (see the ice-cream truck isolated in a moorland environment), Josh has treated his subjects with great respect.

The Exhibition opens on 6 March - register your interest on our Facebook page.

Josh will exhibit portion of this Exhibition at this year’s Head On Festival in Sydney. We congratulate Josh and are happy to be his Out-of-Town preliminary performance.

World Photo Book Day

Screen Shot 2026-09-29 at 12.35.35 PM

World Photobook Day is an opportunity to discover the value of seeing photographs used within the context of books and printed material. Foto Frenzy is pleased to participate this year on Tuesday 14 October.

An interesting self produced book by Christchurch photographic artist Doc Ross will be on display.

37 details the 37 seconds of the Christchurch earthquake told by 37 people each using 37 words. It is a remarkable document and Gallery Frenzy Director Ian Poole spoke about the book in his blog - http://poolefoto.wordpress.com/2014/05/30/artists-who-take-photographs/ One of many amazing books on public display for the first time in Brisbane.

Those Masters of the hand made photo book, Dr Doug Spowart and Dr Vicky Cooper are hoping to attend in the middle of the day with some of their valuable treasures. Seeing some of their remarkable books is worth the trip to down town Coorparoo.

Everyone connected with Foto Frenzy will be sharing particular treasured photo books, and we would welcome the opportunity of looking at any favourite items from your collection. We will have a few very early editions of the AIPP/IAP Award books on display and a variety of zines and hand made photo books.

Maris Rusis : Original Photographs

In an age where digital photography is the commercial norm, Gallery Frenzy is very pleased to exhibit photographs by Maris Rusis. Maris Rusis : Original Photographs will showcase the results of photography by Tewantin based Rusis.

Masonic Hall, Barcaldine

© Maris Rusis; Masonic Hall, Barcaldine.

An avowed user of the analogue photographic system, Rusis’ Exhibition is a primer for anyone wishing to understand the process. Rather than relying of one of the many Photoshop variants of black and white conversion, or resorting to Nik software; this is a great opportunity to see first hand the difference between contacting printing from a 10×8″ negative and enlarging from a 6x7cm negative. Rusis is a master of his art and has exposed, processed, printed, matted and framed the entire Exhibition. This is work by a master photographer at the top of his game. He rarely exhibits photographs and this exhibition is not only a chance to view such work, but for a lucky few an opportunity to own a photograph.

The work covers genres ranging from traditional landscape to motel interiors to iconic outback corrugated iron structures. Rusis will be present at the Opening and will enthusiastically explain his techniques and rationale. Gallery Frenzy wholeheartedly endorses this Exhibition to all photographers as an opportunity to see a style of craft not commonly available for viewing.

All pictures are made from light-sensitive substances, principally gelatin-silver halide emulsions on film and paper substrates. Processing is done by hand and follows the original pattern of exposure. development, fixation and archival finishing. - Exhibition catalogue

Opening is Monday 3 February 2014 at 6:30pm.

Exhibiting at Gallery Frenzy

Foto-Frenzy Gallery

Damian_Nepal_Exhibtion_012013 has seen thirteen Exhibitions hung at Gallery Frenzy. We are proud of the fact that sales have been made at all of our exhibitions. Our artists have ranged from first time solo exhibitors, to well known mid career professionals, to large group shows. With exhibitors like John Elliott, Cooper+Spowart, Stef Dunn, Nicola Poole, Hardy Lamprecht, Some Brisbane Photographers, Damian Caniglia, Vanessa Laverty and Attree+Brackstone; Gallery Frenzy is now looking forward to showing your photographs in 2014.

Now is the time to put forward a proposal to show your photographs on the walls at Gallery Frenzy.
We have been encouraged to enlarge the showing space here at Frenzy by adding a second gallery, to be completed later this year. Whilst we have several confirmed bookings for 2014, we are now calling for expressions of interest. Our website shows answers to many of the frequently asked questions, but here are some ideas you may consider prior to submitting:

  • With your submission we would like to see a body of work that is in the genre you wish to show:
  • Whilst we can review these photographs as digital files, we would prefer to discuss them with you as photographic prints. It is not necessary that they are either large nor of exhibition standard - content is what we are looking for at this time;
  • If you are nervous about committing to a solo show at this time, please consider making a submission; as we have an interest in curating one or two group shows through the year giving an opportunity to photographers new to the gallery context;
  • We will also welcome small groups exhibiting a body of work - maybe three to five persons. A great opportunity for members of a camera club to work together to get photographs hung on the walls; and
  • Remember, Gallery Frenzy can provide curatorial assistance, printing of photographs, matting and framing photographs, writing an Artist’s Statement, and even offer practical advice regarding an Opening Night function.

Email your submission to and arrange to come in and discuss with us your proposal. We look forward to seeing you.

October Update

We thought it was about time we updated you on what’s been going on at Foto Frenzy Photography Centre and what we’ve got coming up.

In August we welcomed the very talented Peter Coulson to Brisbane to run a series of workshops for us covering such topics as Advanced Studio Lighting, Natural Light Masterclass and Photoshop Techniques. All the workshops were essentially a sell out and the lucky attendees gained some valuable insight into the techniques of one of Australia’s hardest working and most talented fashion photographers.

After being officially announced a Canon Master in August, Foto Frenzy’s own underwater photographer extraordinaire, Darren Jew had an even better September when he took out the title of 2013 Australian Science, Environment and Nature Photographer of the Year at the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA).

Congrats Darren on yet another great success!

Have a look at Darren’s and the other category award winning photos on the AIPP Blog

Gallery Frenzy is proud to announce the next exhibition in the 2013 calendar.

Developed In Darkness is a joint exhibition between Brisbane photographer Mel Brackstone and our own Cam Attree. The central theme of this exhibition revolves around an exploration of the female form where Cam’s stark, almost clinical study of black and white Infrared photographs contrasts heavily against Mel’s soft, dreamy and quite feminine images.

Please join us for the opening of this exhibition of a black and white exploration of the human form on Friday October 18, 2026 at 6.30pm

Brisbane Camera Hire has a couple of awesome new acquisitions for you to play with over summer! Available now is the Canon 6D and the EF 200-400mm f/4 IS L USM + built in 1.4x Teleconverter.

The 6D is a fantastic new full frame camera which is about 95% of a 5D MkIII in a smaller and lighter body. Compared to the MkIII, the 6D metering, resolution, high ISO performance and image quality is essentially identical. A great full frame back up camera for the wedding photographers out there, or a nice, light every day camera.

The 200-400mm f/4 IS is a stunning piece of glass with the unique difference of having a built in 1.4x teleconverter at the flick of a switch. Flick over to a 280-560mm without taking you eye from the finder. This lens is a sports photographers dream.

THE GREAT BARRIER REEF: A Queensland Museum Discovery Guide. ISBN: 978 09751116 5 9

Foto Frenzy knows Gary Cranitch for his support as a Friend of Frenzy. Cranitch has formal qualifications gained at the College of Art (Griffith University), Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) and a commercial dive certification. His work has been published in Australian Geographic, Popular Science (USA), New Scientist, and National Geographic online; as well as various publications and journals around the world. In 2008 Cranitch was awarded the Canon AIPP Science, Nature and Environment Photographer of the Year Award. "The Great Barrier Reef" Book,

But more importantly is his 30+ years of working with the Queensland Museum as a photographer. The Queensland Museum has just published the definitive volume documenting the Great Barrier Reef. Principal Author is Greg Czechura and Cranitch is Principal Photographer. Czechura has written extensively on a range of natural history subjects, particularly birds of prey; and his contributions have been published in a number of Museum Wild Guides.

Much of the content and almost all of the photographs found in The Great Barrier Reef Discovery Guide are the result of the CReefs Project. In 2007, the Queensland Museum Network was invited to participate in the Australian node of the CReefs Project; an international collaboration designed to assess and explain the diversity, distribution and abundance of reef life.

CReefs Australia involved the systematic sampling and identification of coral reef biodiversity from three key Australian reef sites: the Great Barrier Reef’s Heron and Lizard Islands and Ninglaoo Reef in Western Australia.

This project, made possible through a $3.4 million grant from BHP Billiton, resulted in the identification of 1,200 new species, and thousands yet to be described. Most importantly, the project has established the first ever baseline for coral reef biodiversity. These findings will be used to inform policy decisions regarding the future of the Great Barrier Reef.

The significance of the printed page is seriously on display with this project. This Guide is the first definitive document about the Barrier Reef in over 40 years; and is destined to become the volume of reference for the next few decades. DSC_9361

To mark this launch, Cranitch will display some photographs from The Great Barrier Reef Discovery Guide and talk about the production of the book on Wednesday 7 August 2013 at 6:30pm at Foto Frenzy, 3/429 Old Cleveland Road, Coorparoo. This free event will feature some light refreshments, a display of enlarged photographs, a presentation by Gary Cranitch and the opportunity of having your personal copy signed by the author. Copies will be on sale during the evening (RRP - $59.95).

A great opportunity to have a personalised copy of this great reference book on your library shelves.

That’s Right - We have a Hire Studio Also…….

Ian-Poole

Alice Posing at Studio Frenzy

In amongst the excitement of creating tintypes and colloidian plates, teaching analogue black and white photography, understanding off-camera flash, learning new skills at Mount Barney Lodge, exhibiting fabulous new work in first time solo exhibitions, hosting industry workshops, hiring photographic equipment, processing old-school film (and selling it as well); we almost forgot the Studio at the back of Foto Frenzy.4U3A9259_aaa

Do you need a simple studio to complete that University/College assignment, shoot a fashion catalogue in a day, discreetly create a maternity shoot, finalise that unpublished Great Photographic Project, produce a series of corporate portraits, or just experiment with new techniques or equipment? Studio Frenzy may be your answer.

With 50 square metres of space, a 3.3 metre ceiling, stunning natural light by way of antique french doors and off-street parking……. and only six kilometres from the CBD - this may be the photographic solution for you.

Ian-Poole

Hollie and Stephanie; © Ian Poole 2013.

We recently had Hollie from Zealous Swimwear working on a new catalogue with Stephanie taking the images. We can’t show you any images of course, (commercial-in-confidence), but we can show you the Studio in action.

It was a busy day at Foto Frenzy, with a constant stream of visitors to view the current exhibition, the girls (and there were lots of them) working on the catalogue, and our long suffering Ron matting and framing the fabulous Darren Jew Liquid Light Exhibition destined for display at the Bondi Pavilion in Sydney as part of the Head-On Festival.

Of course we really should spend more time talking about the Studio Cat, T-Max, but as he is nocturnal and lives in the ceiling, he is very rarely sighted.

Perspectives of Form

Hardy-Lamprecht

Threesome; © Hardy Lamprecht.

Perspectives of Form: A Sojourn Away, an exhibition of black and white photographs by Hardy Lamprecht, is currently showing at Gallery Frenzy until 30 May. This collection of twenty-nine images is Lamprecht’s first solo exhibition and is proving popular with viewers and collectors alike.

Hardy-Lemprecht

Longlines; © Hardy Lemprecht.

With the exhibition open less than a week, we are proud of the first five sales to discerning purchasers. Demonstrating a fine understanding of tone, texture and lighting, Lamprecht has managed to reduce man-made objects into abstract photographic interpretations. A reference to the title is often necessary to find the image’s location, such is the abstraction. This enables the viewer to concentrate on shape and style rather than playing the role of tourist.

As Lamprecht stated in the exhibition catalogue - the world is full of form and because our perception of it is optional and sometime subjective, we can miss its random wonders of symmetry, geometry, texture and repetition.

The Gallery Frenzy space is proving popular, and the 2014 calendar of bookings will be opened in the next few weeks. Shows are planned until the end of this year, and if you are wish to attend our next opening, please register your interest on our website. Daze of Futures Past by Vanessa Laverty will open on 6 June.

The images illustrated in this article have been sold, BUT there are still some wonderful photographs available. The Gallery is open on weekdays from 10:00 to 4:30, and by appointment at other times.
